40 years

Earlier this month I went home to Joseph City to celebrate my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary with my family. The number 40 brings to mind hardship of biblical proportions: It rained on Noah for 40 days and nights; Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting and then was tempted by Satan; Moses and the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for 40 years after leaving Egypt. I’m sure there has been plenty of hardship in the 40 years my parents have shared their lives, too, but you’d never know it by looking at them — they are the most loving couple I’ve ever seen.

A few years ago, the family was gathering in their bedroom for family prayer, and I noticed that their wedding photo had faded quite a bit. When I commented on it, my dad replied, “But the romance hasn’t (faded).” They still hold hands anytime they’re together. My dad rubs my mom’s feet while reading scriptures to her. My mom finds the time to bake homemade bread because my dad loves it so much. And there are countless other examples of the many ways they show their love to each other.

The family gathering was a lot of fun, with good food and lots of laughter. I didn’t manage to take very many pictures, but my sisters Kit and Celia and sister-in-law Lari have some good ones on their blogs. I did manage, however, to get video of some of the fun things we did.
